This Fall 2016, we at Balm + Honey Farm were thrilled to expand our apiary by four additional hives, bringing the total in our care this year to 11 hives. There are plans for big expansion in the new year, but the work on a farm, as you may have heard, is never ending, so we expand when we can.
It is vital to our sustainable model here at the farm that we raise bees of strong genetics that are inclined to be resistant to pests and problems. Using synthetic chemicals is out of the question for us as beekeepers; we daily seek to care for our bees while doing as little as possible to ensure their welfare and continuity. It is a delicate balance, the mindfully keeping bees while letting them -be- honeybees at the same time.
We're saying prayers for our bees daily. Caring for them is a weighty and, yes, maybe even noble, job-- one we do not take lightly.
