Great news, food and farm friends! Organic, non-GMO, U.S. heirloom garlic is in the ground at the farm!
And oh, do we ever need it. A recent Australian study seems to corroborate what the National Geographic told us back in 2008: that the Chinese garlic in our grocery storesis grown in human waste. As if that weren't horrifying enough, we're learning that to keep their garlic from molding before we eat it, the Chinese are bleaching and spraying it with methyl bromide, a scary pesticide that's banned elsewhere in the world.
Uhhh... no.
Considering garlic is a super food... and that scientists in South Carolina are proving that THREE natural compounds contained in garlic are proving effective at destroying cancer cells... we need access to safe, naturally-grown garlic.
Now is the time for U.S. farmers, growers, and backyard gardeners to plant garlic in earnest.
Want to try some of ours? Look for it at the market next summer. And thanks, friends, for supporting the clean, local food movement!
