The Way It Grows Around Here

The Way It Grows Around Here

What you see depends on how you view the world. To most people, this is just dirt. To a farmer, it's potential. -Doe Zantamata

The life - and health - of an organic farm is bound up in the life - and health - of its soil. This week, we spent days hauling in 4 tons of organic compost and spreading it, with wheelbarrow and shovel, down our planting beds. It's hot, hard work, but it's important... no, it's vital... to the farm's success. Growing organically means we seek biological solutions to issues like plant health, diseases, pests and weeds. It means we can't run to the nearest Big Store and buy chemicals to dump and spray and call it a day. Bio-intensive, organic farming means we help nature do what God intended it to do all along: work in harmony, as a system, to grow healthy roots, plants, and ultimately, food. It just requires a little more planning and a little more work is all.

But we see potential. Sure, it may look like dirt to you. But to this new farmer, this soil is already showing us that with mindful care and gentle working, some healthy, real food is in our future. And we can't wait to share it with you.

Stay tuned for details on our upcoming Farmily Shares and Fall/Winter 2016-2017 market dates! -Brin
